Peak District Towns – Beautiful Buxton
The bustling, historic town of Buxton is nestled right on the edge of the Peak District National Park. The town attracts many visitors each year and rightly so. The spa town’s highlights include the superbly designed ‘Crescent’ which dates from the 1700s, the Dome which is a spectacular building, now a part of the University of Derby. The lovely landscaped Pavillion Gardens shouldn’t be missed and there is also the original spa pump house and a temple folly located high on a hill, offering incredible views.
If visiting make sure you also check out the highest Opera House in England! The Edwardian Buxton Opera House was founded in 1903 and then recently restored to it’s former glory. There is a wide variety of events to choose from and as well as opera there are many other theatre productions on offer.
You can’t leave Buxton without seeing how their most famous export is made. The famous Buxton mineral water is sold internationally and is produced in the heart of the town. To see and taste the water for yourself you can find the geothermal spring at St.Ann’s well.
Shopping is also a big attraction in Buxton. The town has an abundance of high street stores and also some more exclusive boutiques and independent shops. Many Crafts, antiques and fashionable clothes can be found here and the town’s compact layout makes shopping a very pleasant experience. Also check out the popular market on Tuesdays and Saturday.
Being so close to the border of the National Park, Buxton rightly earns its nickname as Gateway to the Peak District. The surrounding countryside is an incredible sight – perfect for walks and treks, and all manor of outdoor activities. The nearby limestone cave of Poole’s Cavern is also worth a visit. Buxton makes a perfect choice for those wanting a destination that combines culture, retail therapy, outdoor fun and flora & fauna spotting.
